About the Artist

Growing up in a half-Indian, half-white household, I always struggled knowing where my place was in the world. I never comfortably fit in with the majority-white population in my hometown, but never felt “Indian enough” for my Dada and Dadi, aunties and uncles, and Indian friends, either. My siblings and I were, by nature, untraditional anomalies.
Learning how to express my belonging through awe and wonderment of the world has been, and continues to be, my most fulfilling journey. I navigate life through beauty, beginning with a deep interest in the art of henna, which gave me a number of jobs at multi-cultural events. However, I always felt miserable after. No one was interested in hearing about my relationship with my culture.
After a few years, and understanding a little bit more about myself and what I actually wanted, I bought a stack of canvases and some gold acrylic paint, and I started something new. Using the cellophane sheets I already had on hand from my henna days, I developed a new-to-me technique of painting, by piping acrylic onto the canvas and creating a relief. No time restraints, no working on other people’s schedules but my own, expressing my culture fully, in my own untraditional, anomaly, sort of way.
I love having beautiful things and I want other people to have beautiful things, and Sundina Design is my way of doing that, blending my two worlds into one, into a place where I fully belong and where others can belong with me.
Thanks for coming on this journey with me,
- Alexandra
